Mai has degrees in Hydraulic Engineering from Saint Petersburg State Polytechnical University (Russia) and in Water Resources Management from University of Stuttgart (Germany). His Master thesis was completed at Bundesanstalt für Wasserbau (Karlsruhe, Germany) with focus on uncertainty quantification and evaluating the reliability of hydro-morphological river model using model reduction techniques. Since January 2016 he has started his PhD in Forschungszentrum Jülich under the supervision of Prof. Andrea Schnepf, Prof. Jan Vanderborght (Forschungszentrum Jülich) and Prof. Rainer Helmig (University of Stuttgart). The main goal of the PhD project is to develop a virtual root-soil system for water and nutrient uptake from a single root scale to full 3D architectural root system scale. Using the virtual root-soil system, the soil properties can be optimized by in silico experiments to enhance the plant growth and crop yield. The work is funded by BonaRes SOIL3 project which focuses on Sustainable Subsoil Management in cropping systems. His research interest includes soil-plant interactions, biogeochemical transport processes, mathematical modelling and simulation techniques. Mai is always open to discussion and exchange new ideas.
